The last thing Captain Dale Stovall a C-141 transport pilot wanted to do was go through transition training to become a HH-53 helicopter pilot. Helicopters flew low and slow and there was little that appealed to Stovall about the assignment. However, once assigned to the 40th ARRS Stovall found that it took a great deal of airmanship and courage to go out and retrieve downed airman. Stovall and his rescue aircrew demonstrated that you didn’t need to be a fighter jock to have, “the right stuff”.
